Work is finally under way to demolish the derelict St Mary's Hospital in Colchester before developers start work on a housing scheme.

Jaygate Homes plan a multi-million pound development of 266 homes.

The Balkerne Hill building was originally opened as a workhouse in 1836 for the destitute, sick and those too feeble to work, before becoming a hospital.

It closed its doors to patients in 1993 and the increasingly run-down building has been targeted by vandals and drug users.
