Three schools are leading the way when it comes to teaching youngsters English.
Clacton County High School, Tendring Technology College at Frinton and the Harwich School are among six selected at the forefront of the subject across the county.
The hopes are that others will follow their example.
Marilyn Miners, an Essex literacy manager, said a national strategy was brought in during last September.
"We asked schools to put themselves forward and then had to make judgements about who could lead the way," she said.
"Six were chosen and three of them were from the Tendring district. We now want others to follow suit."
Charlie McArthy, head of the English department at Clacton County High School, said he had a fantastic team of 15 teachers and assistants.
"It has been through hard work, creativity and imagination that we have achieved this status within Essex," he said.
