The fire service today warned people in Basildon they are "at risk" from fires started by cigarettes.
Basildon's fire service said it has seen too many deaths and injuries in the town where the nicotine sticks are to blame.
A national television campaign was launched by the fire brigade this week showing domestic fires caused by smoking where the occupier is asleep.
Basildon's community fire safety officer Jack Imrie said: "The careless use and disposal of smoking material is the biggest killer of fire victims worldwide.
"This year, there will be 1,800 adults in the UK who will be injured by fires started by cigarettes. Around 140 adults, mostly young males, will die in fires started by cigarettes."
