A new centre telling the story of East Tilbury's British Bata Shoe Company and the Bata estate is set to open next month.
The centre - based at east Tilbury library - is funded by a grant from the Cory Environmental Trust and is a partnership between the local community and Thurrock Council's libraries and cultural services departments.
Although not quite complete yet, local councillor and former Bata employee Barry Palmer was given a sneak preview of the Bata Resource Centre last week.
He said: "I'm amazed by the amount of information gathered so far by the local volunteers and the collection is constantly growing.
Winifred Price is the centre's chairman. She said: "We are now urging the public to provide us with information which can be recorded for future generations to learn about the unique experience of living and working under the Bata umbrella."
Anybody who would like to help with memories or memorabilia can contact the centre at East Tilbury Library, Princess Avenue on 01375 844921.
