Plans to build 96 sheltered homes on the former Queen's Hotel site in Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff, have finally been given the green light.
Southend Council gave the go ahead to the scheme by developers McCarthy and Stone despite pleas by Lib Dem members to continue seeking for a hotel on the site.
James Clinkscales (Lib Dem, Blenheim Park) said: "A top class hotel would be better for the town than homes for 96 old people which will only benefit the developer. We are lacking in quality hotels for people wanting to stay more than just a night. Southend is still regarded as a bed and breakfast town."
But David Garston (Con, Southchurch) said: "We are trying to regenerate Hamlet Court Road and this scheme is better than an empty site. I am delighted to give it my full support."
