A futuristic entrance to Southend Pier with a transport link to the town centre is to be unveiled tomorrow.
Tony North, executive councillor for leisure, said the council revealed an Edwardian or Victorian frontage to the world-famous landmark had been rejected by English Heritage.
The move follows a wide-ranging blueprint for the pier, drawn up last year, following a major consultation with traders and other groups. Mr North said: "English Heritage seems to be impressed by the possible scheme."
Mr North said only artist's impressions of the possible scheme were available at the moment but would not be made public until after Tuesday's cabinet meeting.
He added it was certain that any application for planning permission for the new entrance would be called in by the Government for more scrutiny and could involve a public inquiry.
