Investigations were today continuing into an arson attack on a bungalow in Jaywick.
Lighted material was put through the letterbox of the property in Austin Avenue yesterday and a woman in her 30s was trapped inside.
She managed to put out the flames with a bucket of water and escape.
Sub-officer Jack Warner said two fire crews from Clacton attended the blaze at 1.46am.
"We got there in three to four minutes and it was reported that persons were trapped inside," he said.
"The woman had been unable to get out of the door because that was where the fire had started, but she had tackled it herself and got out by the time we got there."
Mr Warner said it was believed lighted paper had been forced through the letterbox.
"It is being treated as suspicious at this stage and police and fire investigations teams were at the scene during the day," he added.
A spokesman for Clacton police said a man had been arrested and questioned about the incident, but released on police bail.
