Colchester United surrendered their five-match undefeated record at promotion chasing Oldham Athletic where the scoreline somewhat flattered the home team.
The U's forced the pace throughout most of the opening half and rattled their illustrious hosts with a cracking Kemal Izzet goal after only 12 minutes.
Allan Smart levelled the scores with a well placed header 11 minutes later before the Latics snatched the lead out of the blue with a thunderous Paul Murray 35-yard drive just before half-time.
The home side controlled most of the second half and moved further ahead on the break via David Eyres 13 minutes before fulltime only moments after Scott McGleish squandered a great chance to level the scores.
Carlo Corazzin added Oldham's fourth in the final minute of normal time.
