Colchester were denied a draw as Brett Ormerod struck twice for Blackpool, giving the home side a 2-1 victory in Division Two.
But there was better news for Southend as they found their scoring form in fine style beating Swansea City 4-2.
The U's thought they had grabbed a point when Kemal Izzet cancelled out a first half strike from Ormerod in the 86th minute in Colchester's Division Two match.
But the Blackpool striker had the last laugh when the U's let him in again to score the winner in the 90th minute.
Despite the departure of David Webb earlier in the week Southend reacted in a positive way netting four against Swansea at Roots Hall in Division Three.
Two goals came from the penalty spot through Kevin Maher with other strikes from Tesfaye Bramble and Barrington Belgrave.
Swansea scored through Michael Howard and Stuart Roberts but ended the match on a sour note with Kristian O'Leary being given his marching orders for sending Bramble tumbling in the 90th minute.
