A police investigation has been launched after a 28-year-old man was found at home with serious head injuries.
The Dovercourt man was today (Friday) in a critical condition in Oldchurch Hospital in Romford after undergoing emergency surgery.
But detectives are still uncertain if the injuries are the result of an attack or an accident.
He was found at his home in Clarke's Road yesterday morning (Thursday) by a member of his own family.
He was immediately taken to Colchester General Hospital and from there transferred to Oldchurch for specialist treatment.
An Essex Police spokeswoman said it was unclear if the man had simply fallen or had been attacked.
She said a police investigation was under way and a forensic examination of the house would take place.
She added: "At this stage we do not believe there was anybody else involved. He was found on the floor with wounds to his head. His condition is described as very poorly and he is very unwell.
"We think he suffered the injuries as the result of an accident, but an investigation is on going and we are keeping an open mind."
Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Clacton CID on 01255 221312 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
