Town centre chiefs in Basildon have sumitted an outline bid for £350,000 in Government cash to fund the construction of a 24-hour CCTV camera network.
The bid, drawn up by the Town Centre Partnership, would link the four current systems into one, and include a fully-manned control room.
The partnership, which includes businesses, the police and Basildon Council, has to put forward full proposals in the new year.
