Chelmsford and Essex Museum is turning back the clock.
It is changing its name to the Chelmsford Museum, the title it started with in 1835 when it was first founded.
Nick Wickenden, Chelmsford Council's museum's manager, said the museum has had a long and varied history since it was founded.
Other names since then had included the Essex and Chelmsford Museum and the Chelmsford and Essex Museum.
He said: "We do not pretend that we are a museum for the whole county. Instead we prefer to concentrate on the borough and community of Chelmsford and provide a service for local residents and visitors.
"The name change reflects this more local focus."
The Essex Regiment Museum, on the same site in Oaklands Park in Moulsham Street, will continue to provide a countywide history and information point on the various military units of Essex since Napoleonic times.
The museums are open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and on Sundays from 2pm to 5pm and admission is free.
