A multi-million pound "flagship" arts venture is being looked into for Colchester as part of plans to turn the town an eastern region culture capital.
The town was dubbed a "key strategic location" by East England Arts, which has been reviewing current cultural needs for the region.
Although only at its early stages, the idea of building a new gallery or carrying out a refurbishment for more artistic space in the town is now on the cards.
The Arts Council has brought in a new £176 million funding budget and Colchester Council might lodge an interest in a slice of the money.
