New CCTV cameras will not be installed in a notorious area of Canvey plagued by late-night vandalism - despite desperate calls from worried residents.

Castle Point Tory councillor Sylvia Waymark had hoped council members would decide to take action at a meeting this week, but the problems with hooliganism in Furtherwick Road were overlooked.

The frustrated councillor has now vowed to continue the fight to give greater protection to long-suffering residents in the section of Furtherwick Road leading to the seafront.

Mrs Waymark (Canvey South) said: "I am disappointed the council did nothing. CCTV is definitely needed in my ward.

There has been so much vandalism there that it has made a lot of people upset. So many things have been smashed including brick walls and phone boxes."

In recent weeks, residents have fiercely complained after the Monico Hotel in Eastern Esplanade was granted a late-night licence.

They fear more trouble from party-goers as they leave later each evening.

Meetings between residents, Monico owners and the police are due to be held this month in a bid to stamp out the problems.

Mrs Waymark said it was important any cameras eventually installed were powerful enough to pinpoint the culprits.

She said good cameras were needed to catch the vandals, not ones that could only see shapes.
