Teenagers can now prove how old they are with the flash of a new photocard.
Southend's first proof of age card was officially launched as 17 and 18-year-olds flocked to sign up for the scheme.
The Citizencard aims to cut down on the abuse of age-restricted products and save teenagers the embarrassment of being questioned about their age when they are legally entitled to buy products.
Shops in Southend which sell products such as alcohol, cigarettes and videos have been informed by trading standards about the card scheme.
The project was launched yesterday at Belfairs High School in Highlands Boulevard, Leigh, by Southend mayor Graham Longley, councillors and representatives from Southend trading standards.
Youngsters who sign up for the new card will be entitled to various discounts at a wide range of shops and will also receive free minutes for their mobile phones.
