HIGH-PROFILE Labour councillor Tim Young will appear before Colchester Magistrates next week on four charges including assaulting a police officer and dangerous driving.

Mr Young, 39, of Damask Road, Stanway, is leader of the Labour Group for Colchester Council and the party's prospective Parliamentary candidate.

He said he would be pleading not guilty when he appears at Colchester Magistrates Court on Thursday, facing charges of assaulting a police officer, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and failing to stop and report an accident.

The charges relate to an alleged incident at the newly opened Middleborough traffic scheme on December 1.

Mr Young has represented St Andrew's Ward, Greenstead, since 1992, is Labour Group leader and council portfolio holder for housing, community safety and health.

He said: "It was all a total misunderstanding as far as I'm concerned due to the bedlam and traffic chaos at Middleborough on that day."

Mr Young maintained he had not hit anything and said his solicitor had advised him not to say any more.

He is currently on police bail.
