Southend United boss David Webb is hoping to tie up a deal for Cambridge City left-back Shane Wardley.

Earlier in the week, the Shrimpers chief made an offer to the Dr Marten's League Premier Division outfit for the defender and his team mate, striker Tesfaye Bramble.

And the non-League side have agreed a deal for 20-year-old Wardley, who was expected to meet Webb for further talks yesterday (Thursday).

However, the part-timers refused to sell highly rated frontman Bramble, who had a trial with First Division Tranmere Rovers at the start of the season.

"I've agreed a small fee with Cambridge City for Shane and I'm hoping to complete the deal before the weekend," Webb said.

"He's an old fashioned type of left-back who is very comfortable on the ball and could do a good job for us in midfield as well.

"Shane likes a tackle and he isn't the sort of player to hold back. He also enjoys getting forward and having a shot at goal.

"In a lot of ways he reminds me of Scott Forbes because he has the same raw energy. Shane also has the desire to make a success of his chance in League football.

"I'm sure he'll prove to be a good acquisition to our squad and help provide added competition among the players."

Webb also revealed he had bid for another frontman currently attached to a First Division club. "I've made a cash offer for a striker," he said.

"But the club in question are also trying to buy a forward and it is a case of them not wanting to let a player go until they get another one in themselves. Hopefully, I'll have some positive news before the weekend."

Finally, Webb confirmed that Blues hitman Trevor Fitzpatrick has been discussing a move with Third Division rivals Leyton Orient.

The Southend manager handed the 20-year-old former Ireland youth player a free transfer at the start of the week and he could complete a switch to Brisbane Road before Saturday.

"Orient's manager Tommy Taylor rang me to ask permission to speak to Trevor which I willingly gave," said Webb. "He has been down to Brisbane Road and I'm waiting to hear if there are any developments."
