A major new work of art is taking shape in Basildon to bring a fresh look to the regenerated town centre. The five-metre high sculpture, by Rochford-born artist Michael Condron, was commissioned after his idea was put out for public comment. The new sculpture, called Progression, will form an important part of Basildon Council's community arts project which aims to add fresh colours and dimensions to the town centre. When finished the sculpture - just yards from the Costa Coffee pavilion - will depict three figures striding across the grass. It is made of a strong and durable stainless steel. An official unveiling will take place in the new year. A council spokesman said: "The project has involved the community with each short-listeded artist holding workshops in schools, gathering ideas and helping the pupils."
