Southend United starlet Garry Cross has spoken of his determination to fight his way back into Blues boss David Webb's plans.
The 20-year-old fullback was one of a trio of the Third Division club's youngsters recently placed on the transfer list, alongside fellow defender Tom McDonald and forward Yemi Abiodun.
But Cross, who has played a handful of first team games this season, believes he can still have a long term future at Roots Hall.
"I want to stay at Southend and I'm determined to turn things around," said Cross, who is a transfer target for Ryman Premier Division promotion chasers Canvey Island.
"It came as a major shock when I was told I could leave. But I don't see this as being the end of my Roots Hall career.
"I can still show the manager that I'm a good player and hopefully get him to change his mind about me. Things can change very quickly in football."
Essex boy Cross, who comes from South Woodham Ferrers, admitted he had let himself down however.
The right-sided player, who can also play in midfield, was regarded as one of the best young prospects to be produced by Southend for years.
And he was given a three-year contract last season in recognition of his potential. Something which Cross said could ultimately have been his undoing.
"It was nice to get a three-year contract, but if I'm honest with myself it probably pushed me towards the comfort zone," he added.
"I wasn't doing enough and started putting on weight and picking up injuries. But I've been working hard over the last few weeks because I want to get myself back on track."
And finally, Cross said he had no qualms with Shrimpers chief Webb.
"The gaffer has been first class with me," said Cross. "He has taken time to talk to me and has been honest in what he has said.
"It's always better when somebody is straight with you outright - which the manager has been - and I appreciate that. By putting me on the transfer list the boss has given me the kick up the backside I have needed for a long time.
"Now I need to show him that I can be a part of his plans because all I want to do is play for Southend United."
Blues' reserves were in friendly action at Millwall today, kick-off 12 noon.
