Colchester Harriers athlete Paul Spowage was a hero in more ways than one when taking part in the latest Inter Sports League fixture at Hadleigh in Suffolk.
Spowage, a doctor, was the first runner home for the club and fourth overall in the race.
And then he retraced his steps around the course to treat a runner who had fallen and broken his leg.
Other Harriers helped carry the stretcher back across fields, including Dave Papworth and Steve Langley, who had run their hearts out to finish seventh and tenth respectively.
