A brave cancer victim who found love in a lonely hearts column is looking forward to a day she feared she'd never see - her wedding day.

Angie Arthur met hubby-to-be Danny Heffer after spotting his ad in our Two's Company pages.

It was love at first sight. Danny - a caretaker at Halstead's Ramsey School - proposed in October last year. And a thrilled Angie said yes.

It was just six months after they first met in the Mulberry Tree pub in Braintree where Angie used to live.

But weeks later her world was turned upside down. Exactly a year ago she discovered she had breast cancer. The couple, of Lock Road, Halstead, were stunned. But they vowed to fight the illness together.

"This time last year I was sat here thinking this is going to be my last Christmas," said Angie, 44.

"It was early in the relationship but Danny was wonderful. It was really tough for both of us but we worked through it and if anything it made us stronger. Without Danny I couldn't have done it."

Angie, an internet worker at Anglia Polytechnic University in Chelmsford, had to have the breast removed during her year-long battle against illness. She also underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

In October she returned to hospital where surgeons reconstructed the breast.

"That was a difficult decision with the wedding looming," said Angie. "But I decided to go for it and never looked back."

Now Danny, 40, and Angie - who have three grown-up children from previous marriages - are all set to go down the aisle together.

They will be married on Saturday at Braintree Register Office followed by a blessing at St Andrew's Church, Halstead.

Angie said: "It was love at first sight when I met Danny and we've been together ever since through the illness and now we're getting married.

"The wedding will put a bright spot on what has been a horrible year. I'm really excited and now the new year will start on a really positive note."

She added: "Coming to terms with what happened is every woman's worst nightmare. But for any other women going through what I've been through, it's not a death sentence and there is light at the end of the tunnel."
