The world famous Maldon Mud Race has been scrapped.
After months of speculation, it was confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) there is unlikely to ever be another event.
The last mud race - where competitors wade through waist-high mud across the River Blackwater - was held at the beginning of 1999.
This year's event was postponed due to clashes with other millennium celebrations and problems with safety issues.
Now organiser Mike Ballard is reluctantly washing his hands of the mud race, which has been given international coverage and attracted competitors from around the world.
