Stock Brook Manor Gold Club's three time champion Steve Adkins, playing off a handicap of three, could only manage second place in the 2000 Club Championship when he was pipped at the post on Sunday, by four handicapper Mitch Brenner.
The competition, which is played off scratch was, as usual, held over 36 holes.
At the halfway stage Brenner was lying in fourth place after an opening 74 to Steve's 73.
However, as the leaders faltered slightly in the afternoon heat, Brenner was consistency itself and his second 74 of the day, just two over par, was good enough to see him home by one shot from Steve, with Mark Downey, another four handicapper, another shot adrift in third place.
Over 60 players took part and in the Handicap Competition, which runs alongside the Scratch event, Andy Kirk ended his barren spell with a narrow win over Mike Sharp.
Kirk, playing off 11, scored a magnificent 65 net in the morning and managed to hang on to his game in the afternoon with an 83 gross (net 76) for a 36 hole total of 137, just one shot ahead of former golfer of the year, Mike Sharp.
Club Captain Ian Restall presented the trophies to the winners at the end of a long hot day and congratulated all those who took part and made it such a memorable event.
The SBMGC's Seniors Team have won through to the quarter finals of the Essex Seniors Team Trophy, which is a new competition this year and includes Seniors Teams from all over Essex.
