A motorist who died in an accident in Heybridge is believed to have suffered a heart attack.
Horrified onlookers saw a Rover car mount the kerb after it had been in collision with another car.
Police, fire brigade, ambulance and air ambulance attended the incident, near the entrance to the Bentalls Centre at 4.30pm yesterday (Tuesday).
An Essex Police spokesman said the Rover was seen to veer to the offside of the road and collide with a Citroen 2CV travelling in the opposite direction.
It then mounted the offside kerb and came to rest in bushes.
Medical assistance was given but the Rover driver, a 55-year-old man who lived in the Midlands, was certified dead at the scene.
It is believed he suffered a heart attack at the wheel. Nobody else was injured, said the police spokesman.
