A young driver has died after suffering injuries in a horrific road accident which left an onlooker in need of treatment for shock.
Paul Hammond, 24, of Hawkwell Road, Hockley, died after being hit by a lorry as he stood in a layby on the A13 between Sadlers Farm and Pitsea flyover.
Mr Hammond was taken to Basildon Hospital but died from his injuries.
A woman driver of another vehicle parked in the layby was also given hospital treatment for shock. Mr Hammond had got out of his BMW when he was struck by a lorry travelling towards London which also damaged his car and a Ford parked in the layby.
No-one has been arrested following the accident at midday on Monday. The road was closed for three hours after the incident.
