The future of Basildon freestyle kickboxing club is really taking off - thanks to an invite to fly to Barbados.
Word had reached the Caribbean of the Pitsea-based club's brightest prospect, Ricky Judd, and an invite from the World Kickboxing Organisation to bring the 16-year-old, along with his dad Rob, to the paradise island soon followed.
However, a very grateful Rob, who is also a trainer and promoter at Basildon, felt that he could provide a full fight programme for his hosts and has been busy organising funding to fly half-a-dozen of his club's stars to the sun.
He said: "We have been busy contacting local firms and it could be that we get fighters and supporters to Barbados for an outlay of around £300 each, with the difference coming from corporate backing.
Rob's commitment to getting a strong contingent on the dream trip is not only for moral support as he explained: "We owe it to all the members and supporters at this club to try and give something back.
"For years they have travelled up and down the country with us - giving up their own time to back the club and have helped it become what it is today."
In order for all the arrangements to be made the trip has been delayed until early next year.
Rob explained: "We have a few dates to pick from but nothing has been set as yet.
"Over the next few weeks we hope to have a better idea of numbers and we'll decide then."
He even hopes to return the offer by inviting the Bajan team over to south Essex. He said: "It would be great to host a show with some of the Barbados national squad on the bill.
He added: "The whole situation has really created a wave of excitement around the club and local firms have been fantastic in their support - however, you can never have too much help and any financial backing would be most welcome."
If your firm would like to help the club, Rob Judd can be contacted on 01268 728552 (days) or 07712 588701 (mobile).
Meanwhile, Ricky has been busy building on his reputation when he fought in a televised fight night at Bethnal Green's York Hall.
The Basildon teenager was pitted against Norfolk's highly-rated Daniel Flack but made the most of his speed and reach to send his opponent to the canvas twice and secure a unanimous decision.
Another of Basildon's up-and-coming prospects - Shane Burns - was also on the York Hall bill and put on a terrific show for the crowd and cameras.
It was the first time the 18-year-old had fought in front of TV crews and nerves showed in the opening rounds.
It was only from the third round that Shane began to show his true colours but, unfortunately, it was all too late to prevent a split decision defeat.
