Classrooms at a school in Hockley have been sealed off following an asbestos scare, it has emerged.
Four science rooms were closed at Greensward College in Greensward Lane, when workmen carrying out routine maintenance to a roof discovered the suspect material.
Martin Clark, assistant vice principal, said: "Our first priority is the safety of students, staff and visitors which is why these rooms have been removed from use.
As a precautionary measure they have been sealed until specialist contractors can come in to check the material. They will remove it if it is discovered to be asbestos.
"The school has received a grant to enable repairs to some flat roof areas to be done. It was while this was under way over the weekend, material was discovered."
Year 11 and 13 students are sitting exams but their schedule will not be interrupted while the work is taking place. An application has been made to Essex County Council for funds to remove the asbestos as soon as possible.
