Chelmsford councillors look set to consider if ordinary glasses and glass bottles should be banned in pubs and clubs in the borough.
The council's community health and safety committee has been responding to a petition signed by more than 800 young people in the borough worried about safety in local entertainment venues.
The petition calls for normal glasses and bottles to be replaced with shatterproof glasses and follows an incident when a young man received cuts to his face.
The committee agreed last week to refer the issue to the council's licensing sub-committee and ask its officers to investigate the situation with regard to premises which are not subject to such licences.
They will also ask Broomfield Hospital if there are any relevant statistics relating to such incidents.
