An "overwhelming" number of staff registered a vote of no confidence in their headteacher leading to his suspension, we can reveal.

Paul Betts of Barstable School, Basildon, has been suspended pending a full investigation into concerns over management issues at the school.

The decision was taken by chairman of governors John Puddefott who placed deputy headteacher Jonathon Oddy in temporary control.

The unhappy team of staff made known their discontent at the way the school was being run after holding a meeting this week.

An overwhelming number of the 100-strong staff at the school had registered a vote of no confidence in Mr Betts.

The shared feeling was then expressed to the chairman of governors who went on to suspend Mr Betts.

Jerry Glazier, general secretary of the Essex National Union of Teachers, said the strength of feeling may well have been a factor in the decision.

He said: "I can confirm there has been a vote of no confidence in Mr Betts. His suspension is a sensible decision in light of the issues which now prevail at the school."
