Andrew Smith, of Broomfield, made an excellent showing at the National Dwarf Games in Peterborough, where former Olympic star Fatima Whitbread encouraged the athletes and presented the medals.

Andrew won bronze medals in the javelin and shot putt and was fourth in the discus.

Competing for the first time this year in the open men's class and using heavier implements, he threw personal best distances against fierce competition.

Smith excelled in the swimming, his main sport, by winning all the events in his class and even beating swimmers in a higher class in the butterfly event.

He set new British and world dwarf records in four events and swam a superb last leg in the relay to bring his team in to win in a new record time.

Smith then beat his Swedish opponent to win the Senior Men's table tennis and his prowess in badminton won him the gold medal in that event as well.

He also competed in team sports, including basketball and hockey and in the powerlifting, and he was again awarded the coveted Victor Ludorum trophy, as the top Senior athlete of the Games.

Andrew trains with Chelmsford Swimming Club and Colchester Phoenix Disabled SC. He is also a member of Dovedale Flyers Disabled Sports Club.
