Chelmsford Town Police Unit (TPU) issued another warning to shoppers and shops this week to be on the lookout for gangs of pickpockets and opportunist thieves.
The warning applies particularly to charity shops. Gangs three or four-strong, including women, have been "dipping" all over the town centre, and cash and bank cards have been stolen.
Sgt Chris White of the TPU asked shop staff to ensure that their properties are secure when they are on the shop floor.
The criminals have been creeping round to the backs of shops and walking into staff areas to steal handbags and other property.
The elderly are particularly vulnerable, and charity shops have also been targets.
Anyone who sees individuals or groups acting suspiciously in the town centre is asked to contact police immediately.
