A woman was attacked after she pulled over to a layby.
It happened between Bulmer Tye and Castle Hedingham 200 yards from the A131.
The woman, who was driving a dark-coloured people carrier, was followed into the Castle Hedingham road by a red Ford Mondeo.
The driver caused her to pull up, grabbed her by the throat and punched her repeatedly.
During the attack a green car drove towards them. The man stopped his attack and drove off, leaving the woman injured.
The attacker was described as aged 30, with long jet black hair with centre parting, full face, thin eyebrows, small eyes, large hooked nose, straight, thin lips and clean-shaven.
He was about 5 ft 8 in tall, wore blue jeans and plain white short-sleeved T-shirt and had a gold ring on the third finger on his left had.
Police are particularly keen to find the driver of the green car, possibly a Citroen.
