Top guns all fired up
Eighty-four of Essex's finest amateur golfers chase the 69th County Championship over two days at the splendid setting of Chingford's West Essex course this weekend.
Unfortunately, due to a long-standing family commitment, the most successful amateur golfer in Essex, Thorpe Hall's Richard McEvoy, will not be there.
His absence will not detract from the fierce competition the defending champion, Ricky Blaxill of Wanstead, will have to endure from the pack of young golfers coming through the County coaching schemes, and perhaps some of the more mature competitors as well.
County President John Day is looking forward to an exciting contest saying: "Canons Brook's Andrew Fells, the recent winner of the Colts Championship and Chigwell Bowl, and 16-year-old Warren Hayter, from the same club, will be in contention.
"Craig Housden and Andi Pye, of Braintree, are in good form, but the present County Captain Bradley Smith (North Weald) can never be discounted."
Carrying the South-East corner of the county's hopes will be the Thorpe Hall duo of Richard Jeffs and Bill Preedy plus Boyce Hill's Matt Jones, Ricky Sinfield, Paul Ring and James Parker.
Orsett's outstanding young Stuart Fromant, who lives in Wickford, is due a big victory and should get support from Stephen Smith, Mark Whiten and Alex Woodward. Basildon field John Wright and Steve Rooney.
Two rounds are playing on both Saturday and Sunday.
Open day
South Essex Golf and Country Club are hosting an open golf day at their Herongate home on July 1.
The event is totally free of charge and is for all potential golfers to see if they like the game.
The day will include tuition clinics with PGA professionals, equipment advice from experts, free use of clubs, an introduction on where to play and club memberships, and refreshments throughout the session.
Everyone wishing to take part must pre-register by calling Paula Williamson in the sales office on 01277 811289.
Richard round to be won
A chance to play a round of golf with Thorpe Hall's international amateur star Richard McEvoy is one of the treats in store for those who go along to the Shoebury Fair charity auction on Sunday.
Being held around 5pm at Gunners Park, the auction will offer the chance of a golfer to take two colleagues to the Thorpe Bay-based club, who have waived green feees, to play a round with McEvoy.
Other offers you can bid for include golfing memerobilia signed by golfing greats such as ex-Open champions Tom Weiskopf and Tom Watson and former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher.
There are plenty of other items connected with other sports on offer for those who go along.
Winsor takes crown
Southend held their annual guest day in perfect weather conditions. With the course looking in great shape the scores were always going to be hot.
The format was Stableford Betterball and victory went to Lee Winsor, a winner the previous week, and guest Andy Frye.
They scored a total of 48 points with two idential halves of 24. Eighteen-handicapper Frye made par on seven of the first nine holes. Second were Cyril Elliott and guest John Simmons, Boyce Hill's immediate past captain. They scored 45.
Third were Pat Trim and former member Richard Vaughton. The same format was used for the afternoon round of just 13 holes.
Eamonn Flynn and Ron Edwards lead the way with an excellent 34. Len Rice and former member Ivan Cox, who after nine holes had 26 points, were second with 33 and morning winners Winsor and Frye third with 32.
This left Winsor and Frye winning the overall event with a total of 80. Flynn and Edwards were second on 75 with Paul Kreyling and guest Steve Reynolds a further one back.
There was also an individual competition for the best gross score on the par threes with Brian Hull showing a return to form to take first prize.
