Glamorgan beat Essex by 20 runs in the day/night National League fixture at Cardiff on Tuesday as a familiar batting collapse led to the visitors downfall.
Electing to bat after winning the toss, the Welsh side reached 220 thanks to 94 from Australian test player Matthew Elliott, the season's highest score in division two.
The opener was not dismissed until the 40th over of the innings, after which Glamorgan capitulated by losing five wickets for 17 runs in five overs with Ashley Cowan (4-34) returning his best figures of the season in any competition, and Mark Ilott chipped in with two for 31.
Essex began positively in front of the 2,000 crowd with Graham Napier opening the batting in place of the sidelined Stuart Law, missing because of muscular back spasm.
Napier scored 13 and fellow opener Paul Prichard 21 but both were dismissed with the score on 35.
Darren Robinson and Ronnie Irani then combined for 78 in 16 overs with the former facing 58 deliveries for his 51 with seven boundaries.
Irani was out lbw playing across the line for 40 and from thereon the response was ineffective, although Cowan crashed 24 from 17 deliveries to briefly raise false hopes as the last six wickets went down in 10 overs for 53 runs.
