The Shaftesbury evening ten mile events on Wednesday evenings have been successfully supported, not only by Shaftesbury CC club members but by other club's riders looking for midweek training rides.
On Wednesday, 50 took part in the event, probably a record for a club event in the area and showing that the spirit is there for those who want to ride other than weekend events.
The club has a special end of season award for the rider making the best improvement overall, and after nine events in the handicap section Barry Wells is leading with 326 points, closely followed by brother in law Brian Hayes with 314 points.
Bruce Robinson is challenging hard with 312 points and now that the half way point has been reached, it is an exciting point to see who is going to turn out the final victor.
Sue Hyde is leading the ladies section with 262 points with previous champion Cathy Reed challenging with 246 points and last years' ladies champion Gloria Tanner in third place with 230 points.
The scratch section is led by Ieuan Reed with 65 points with Bruce Robinson in second place with 60 points and 1999 Road Race champion Robert Wright in third place with 52 points.
In the junior section Simon Wells is battling it out with brother Matt Wells with 296 and 247 points respectively.
Most of the weekend racing has taken a serious downturn because of the roadworks on the A12.
Many of the scheduled events have been cancelled because of roadworks suddenly commencing and many riders have been looking to ride further away from home because of the uncertainty of events being held.
Some Shaftesbury members travelled to Suffolk to ride in the Ipswich BC 10 miles event on Saturday and although the weather could have been better, recorded good times.
Tony Hanlon was first back to the timekeeper in 24.47, David Meisner was next in 25.00 and Joe O'Herlihy in 25.05, (+15.53).
This was a new veterans club record, but Lorna Hanlon was yet to arrive and her time of 25.57 set a second veterans club record of +16.01.
There are still a few events scheduled at this distance and it will be very interesting to see if these figures can be bettered by riders who are now beginning to feel the benefit of all the miles training they have been putting in during the recent cold and wet weather.
