Disabled athletes came from far and wide to compete in a hugely successful sports day organised by Southend and Rochford Disabled Sports Club.

The event, held at the Rocheway Centre, attracted eight teams in total for events which included discus, pistol shooting and table tennis.

At the end of the day a team who had travelled from Peterborough won the two awards on offer, scooping the shield for the top overall score and also winning the Endeavour Cup for excellence in their debut year on the circuit.

Delighted Elaine Mumford, the sports officer at the Rochford-based club, said: "Peterborough thoroughly deserved their award. There was one girl who suffers from asthma - she had two attacks on the day - and it was inspiring to see her doing so well.

"But everyone who competed enjoyed the day. Everyone had fun, and it was great to meet so many people and forge lots of new friendships."

The club meets regularly at the Rocheway Centre and anyone interested in joining should call Elaine on 01702 511500.
