BROOMHILLS 240-4

HADLEIGH SUNDAY II 227-8

(Match drawn)

Indian Test cricketer Devang Gandhi produced the best innings seen by Hadleigh cricket club in five years in this Ibex League clash - but still could not deliver victory.

Gandhi, who opened the batting four times for India last summer, scored 180 of Hadleigh's 227 total from just 129 deliveries, hitting 13 sixes and nine fours along the way.

His tally equalled the 180 scored by West Indian Test cricketer Junior Murray in 1995 - although it is not thought to be a club record.

Delighted Hadleigh spokesman Jon Wagstaff said: "I couldn't believe it. I was there for Murray's innings in 1995 but this was something else.

"The youngsters at the club have all said what a pleasure it was to watch him in action."

Gandhi, who also took 1-36 with his spin bowling, was only playing for the seconds because the first team were on Evening Standard Trophy duty and overseas players are ineligible.

But he failed to cap his day with victory as Broomhills' excellent total of 240 earned a memorable draw.

C Williams (98), D Wilkins (42) and P Abbott (40) all scored well for the Broomhills side, with B Clarke taking 3-59 when Hadleigh replied.

BECKENHAM 193-8

HADLEIGH SUNDAY I 110

(Beckenham won by 83 runs)

Hadleigh's hopes of repeating last season's heroics in the Evening Standard Trophy evaporated when a weakened side struggled to get even close to the Beckenham total.

Beckenham put on 193 from 50 overs, with Saturday wicketkeeper Duncan Paveling taking 2-39 and veteran Roland Revell taking 2-36.

But Hadleigh, who reached the last 16 last year, saw their hopes dashed once Mike Chapman and Neil Goodman, who shared a 44-run fourth-wicket stand, were dismissed for 34 and 30 respectively.

D Mott provided the best of the visitors' bowling, taking 3-16.

HADLEIGH SATURDAY IV 177-7

FIVES & HERONIANS IV178-8

(Fives won by two wickets)

Hadleigh lost after Fives grabbed the required 11 runs off the final over.

This came despite good knocks from Hadleigh's R Paul (49), K Jenkinson (36) and P Jenkinson (35), plus two wickets apiece from N Anderson, I Harrison and G Davison.
