A gun-wielding robber who demanded cash from terrified bank staff is being hunted by police.

The man walked into the Wickford High Street branch of the Halifax shortly after 10.30am yesterday (Thursday). He approached the counter, produced a black handgun and passed what police have said was a "threatening" note over the counter demanding cash.

The cashier handed over a bundle of cash as customers watched helpless. The robber then fled the scene in the direction of the train station.

Det Sgt Joel Henderson, of Basildon police, said no shots were fired so officers could not be certain whether the gun was real or a replica.

He said: "In the absence of any evidence to the contrary we have to assume it was a real gun. We are now looking at CCTV footage."

Anyone with informationn about the robbery can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
