Detectives investigating the brutal kidnapping of a Basildon man are giving him time to recover from his ordeal before they question him further.

Officers investigating the incident hope time will help the victim remember information which could be vital in the hunt for the men responsible.

The 22-year-old victim was bundled into what is thought to be a green Vauxhall car by two men after shopping at Stacey's Corner in Timberlog Lane, Basildon.

He was driven to Plaistow, east London, but managed to escape when the attackers tried to move him from the car and into the boot. The terrified man ran to a nearby house to raise the alarm.

During the journey he was assaulted and needed hospital treatment for cuts and bruises.

Even though the attackers were at the scene of the kidnap most of the day, police only know they are black with short hair and were dressed casually.

Det Sgt, Joel Henderson, who is leading the hunt, said: "We are going to give the victim 24 hours to think about what happened with the hope he will remember something new.

"He is very frightened. We know from witness statements what happened at Basildon and have spoken to the residents from the home in Plaistow where he ran to.

"The attackers were spotted at the scene. They were there for most of the day and asked people for a bucket and water so they could wash their car.

"What we don't have is a registration number and other information that is vital to help us track the pair down."

Police want to hear from residents living near the scene who may have information on the two men or the car.

It is believed they were parked behind the shops where they waited for their victim for four or five hours.

The incident took place at 8pm on Monday.
