John Gladman took a win at Knockhill on Sunday to secure second place in the Safety Devices Caterham Roadsport Challenge.
The Benfleet driver has 96 points but still trails leader Clive Richards by eight points after the Horsham racer won the first race of the double-header at the Scottish circuit.
Gladman had claimed pole in the first event but he and Richards spent the whole race jockeying for the lead.
Richards took the chequered flag after Gladman fell off at Clark and, despite getting back on the track, was unable to catch the championship leader.
Gladman claimed his third win of the season in the second race after overcoming pole-sitter and team-mate Martin Gregory a couple of laps into the race.
l Rayleigh's Alexander Pilgrim maintained his fourth place in the PTP Autosport Caterham Superlight Challenge after two top ten finishes at Knockhill.
The 17-year-old was ninth in the opening race after a spin and came sixth in the second sprint. Championship leader Ron Jenkinson won both events.
