A teenager has died in a crash which blocked the A120 for six-and-a-half hours.

The accident happened at 6.30pm on Monday when a white Renault lorry cab was in collision with a blue Ford Fiesta at Galley's Corner, Braintree.

The 17-year-old male Fiesta passenger was certified dead at the scene.

Both vehicles had been heading towards the McDonalds roundabout on the Colchester-bound track.

The Ford Fiesta was carrying three young men believed to be from the Braintree area.

The driver of the lorry cab is a 47-year-old man from Little Samford, near Dunmow.

Two fire engines from Braintree, one from Colchester, three ambulances and a doctor attended the scene.

Fire crews worked for two hours to cut the Fiesta driver free. They also had to release the body of the 17-year-old which was trapped in the wreckage of the vehicle.

Braintree Station Officer David Mayes said: "We got the call at about 6.30pm.

"But we had to wait for two hours until the medical teams had finished before we could get them out.

"It was a terrible accident, which was made worse by the boy's age."

The driver and the other passenger from the Fiesta were taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford with what are believed to be serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Details of identities were due to be revealed by police after they had informed the relatives of those involved.

Police want anyone who saw the collision, or either of the vehicles involved travelling along the A120 before the accident, to contact them on 01376 330722.
