Ten-par Downey on top at Southend

Southend Golf Club held a Stableford competition over the weekend, but only Sunday players managed to play as the course was severely waterlogged on Saturday.

The top score was 39 points by Paul Downey. He had 21 points out and 18 on the back nine in a round which contained ten pars.

Rob Halpen came in second on 38 points, 18 out and 20 back, including five pars and a birdie.

Mick Goodwin, steady as ever, was just pipped by Halpen on a better back six. Four-handicapper Goodwin had 14 pars, three bogeys and a birdie in his gross score of 72.

Calvin Williams was fourth. He also had 38 points (19 on each half) for a gross 75.

Williams had birdies on three and five and nine pars but an unfortunate bogey, bogey, finish cost him dear.

Club captain Stan Ferguson finished fifth with 37 points and just pipped Mick Bush with a better back six.

Bush had birdies at two and ten and is enjoying a good run of form at the moment.

Fisk leads hunt for Player's ball

When South African golf superstar Gary Player won the World Matchplay championship at Wentworth in 1971, the ball he used was presented to Basildon Golf Club and mounted on a trophy which is played for each year.

Eight players have qualified for the matchplay stage of this year's event, which is contested later in the year.

Those going through were the two best net scores from each of the three handicap groups, plus the next best two overall.

David Fisk, with two wins in competitions at the new town course already this year, returned another excellent score to lead the qualifiers with a five-under-par 67 in difficult conditions on Sunday.

He was playing in group two and the 15-handicapper had a net 67 to beat the next best man, David Geeves (16), on countback.

Steve Campbell (20) was tops in Division Three with a net 68 - six clear of next best C Harvey (21).

Group one saw D Shevill (eight) winning through on net 70 from ten-handicapper M Etherington on 71. The other qualifiers were P Ridewood (84-13=71) and P J Ward (89-17=72).

The draw for the matchplay stages is Shevill v Harvey; Fisk v Ward; Etherington v Campbell; Geeves v Ridewood.
