An unemployed Harold Hill man was threatened with a knife by thieves before they snatched £300.

Romford Police are warning people not to carry large amounts of cash around following the incident outside Secrets Nightclub, Angel Way, Romford, last week.

The victim, who also had his personal stereo and savings book, stolen by the two thugs, was walking alone when they confronted him at 7.10pm Monday week.

They asked him if he could spare a cigarette and a light but the victim ignored them and when asked again replied "No". But the pair then pushed him to the floor where he put his arms up in front of his face to protect himself.

While he was lying helplessly on the ground one warned him "If you get up now, I'll stab you".

He then grabbed the cash and an Abbey National savings book from the man's back pocket, along with the stereo, before both made their getaway.

Sgt Kevin Barrett of Romford Police said: "Unfortunately this sort of robbery is getting more prevalent in Romford town centre and the descriptions of the suspects involved are often similar. The victim was right to act like he did, ignoring the suspects when asked for a cigarette.

"But he was not wise to carry round such a large amount of cash with him, especially in the early evening when the town centre is dead. Others should take note."

One was described as black, aged about 25, 6ft tall, of stocky build and wearing a black puffa style jacket with a baseball cap.

Witnesses should call police on 01708 779241 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
