Disgruntled residents have taken up arms in a new battle - for better public toilets.

Lavatory paper in Harwich has been described as "sub-standard" by town councillor Steven Henderson - and he has called on Tendring Council to do something about it.

In his role as chairman of the Harwich Community Representatives Group, Mr Henderson has written to the chief executive of Tendring Council demanding a softer approach to encourage tourism.

He said: "We think they should improve the general state of the toilets for the new century. The lack of soap is another thing that could be improved."

A spokesman for Tendring Council blamed the sorry state of Dovercourt toilets on vandalism. But he added: "Things could improve if theft and vandalism stop. Then soap and soft toilet paper could make a welcome reappearance."

Mr Henderson said there was a problem with abrasive sheeting in seaside resorts and he is pulling the chain for perfect privies.
