Ross Hughes' attempt at the British Junior 200m Backstroke record and Lauren Cogdale's event best time swims completed a magnificent set of results for Brentwood at the first Essex age group championships of the year.

Lying in second place overall after the first weekend competition, Brentwood picked up a grand medal total of eight golds, six silvers and three bronze and a number of final placings.

Ten National qualifying times were also achieved by Brentwood swimmers.

In his first and last attempt to break the British Junior 200m Backstroke record, Ross Hughes time of two minutes 4.65 seconds was just slightly outside the current record which stands at two minutes 3.54 seconds.

Not too disappointed at missing the British record Ross went on to take gold in both the 200m Breaststroke and 200m Butterfly.

Lauren Cogdale set two new championship event best times in the girls 12 year old 100m Butterfly and in the girls 100m Backstroke, she also took gold in the 200m Freestyle and silver in the 400m Freestyle.

Alexandra Willoughby won her first ever Essex title when she won the girls 16 year old 200m Butterfly, silver in the 200m Breaststroke and bronze in the 200m Backstroke.

Christie Meckenburgh won silver in the girls 100m Backstroke and Charlene Glover won the silver in the girls 13 year old 400m Individual Medley and Bronze in the 200m Breaststroke.

Other medal winners were: In the 17 year+ age group Lee Rich won silver in both the 400m Individual Medley and 100 Freestyle.

Jessica Kneller took bronze in the 100m Butterfly.

There were excellent swims by Daniel Hunt who made his first ever Essex final in the boys 12 year old 100m Backstroke, Tom West, who made three Essex finals in the boys 12 year old 100m Backstroke and the 200m/400m Freestyle, and Sarah Holdsworth who reached the final of the girls 11 year old 100m Butterfly.

Emily Fitch made first reserve in the girls 11 year old 100m Butterfly.

Both Ben Hughes and Jay Vincent in the boys 17 year+ age group and Christophe Moucarry in the boys 15 year age group had notable swims.
