South Essex has scooped awards for the Government-backed Charter Mark, designed to find top public service groups.

Basildon Hospital scored a hit with its ultrasound department while the council had two outstanding successes in its building control and revenue services.

Also in the same league was the Essex Ambulance Service based at Chelmsford.

Delighted Cabinet Minister Mo Mowlam praised the winning organisations when she said: "There was a record number achieving Charter Mark standard this year.

"The awards are all about services which listen and respond to their users and staff."

Southend's Customs team was also celebrating after winning the award for the excellent service it provides.

The Customs and Excise national tariff classification advice service, based in Victoria Avenue, has been awarded a charter mark in recognition of the excellent service it provides.

The 65-strong team advises importers, exporters and Customs officers at ports and airports on the appropriate tariff classification of products to determine the correct rate of duty.

Spokesman Alan Froy said: "The charter mark is a team award and recognition of the tremendous effort put in by every member of the team in focusing on the needs of our customers.

"We are confident that our service is world class but do not intend to sit back. We know that we must improve all the time if we are to stay ahead and meet ever changing needs."

Essex Ambulance Service NHS trust was awarded the mark for its exceptionally high quality of service for its users.
