A block of flats is set for a dramatic £260,000 facelift.
But the renovation of Melbourne Court in Chelmsford is just one step towards revamping the area, according to ward councillor Russell Kennedy.
Melbourne Court, which was built in 1962, is to have new lifts fitted and all 58 flats are to have the original windows replaced with new PVC double glazing.
Mr Kennedy is pleased with the news of the council cash boost but said more action was needed to reduce the amount of petty crime and vandalism around the flats and the nearby parade of shops.
He said: "I'm delighted, as are residents of Melbourne Court, that this Government is releasing the money received through the enforced sale of council properties.
"But myself and fellow councillors are calling on neighbourhood officers for regular discussion meetings with tenants.
"We will ask them to look into having a permanant security guard in the area to further improve the quality of life of local people."
