Colchester United striker Karl Duguid felt the game was lost when referee Barry Knight ruled out his first half effort for offside.
The U's speedy striker had the ball in the back of the net in the 36th minute when he headed home after David Gregory's effort hit the post.
But the linesman claimed he had strayed offside in the build-up and the U's were denied an equaliser.
Duguid said: "I was disappointed the referee cancelled it out because I believe I wasn't offside.
"It's a move we've been working on in training a lot and I thought I timed my run perfectly, but the officials saw it differently.
"I don't understand why it was ruled out when I watched David Gregory head the ball from an onside position before following it up.
"I think I was way onside and decisions like that cost you the game. Unfortunately I can't say any more about it because otherwise I will run into trouble."
