Residents are on target to transform their housing estate by getting youngsters to let off steam in a five-a-side football festival.

The Humber Road Residents Association, in Witham, is hoping to score a success with the festival for young football fans, as part of their aim to bring back a community spirit to the estate.

The event will take place at Spa Road Playing Field, next to Witham Town Football Club, on Saturday between 9.30am and 1.30pm.

Tony Goult, lead volunteer of the association, said: "There is nothing for the kids to do on the estate. The day will provide something enjoyable for the boys and girls, hopefully it will kick start a new youth sports club for youngsters on Humber Road."

The residents have been working for months to set up the festival with Ben Bartlett, project co-ordinator of Braintree Football Community Link.

The Link is an joint initiative by Braintree Council and NACRO to establish football community clubs, run by local adult volunteers, across the district.

Mr Bartlett said: "The project gives all the equipment required, with the emphasis on participation and enjoyment rather than competition. The idea is to remove any barriers which may prevent young people taking part."

Deputy Chief Constable Charles Clark and Braintree MP Alan Hurst have both endorsed the scheme.

Mr Clark said: "Offering the young people team-related activities assists their personal development and can reduce incidents of youth related crime."

The project is keen to recruit new volunteers to coach, referee and help run the clubs within the Braintree District.
