It has taken Billericay 's Ralph Overill just four years to gain his black belt in shotokan karate.
Ralph, 13, who attends classes at Phoenix Karate Club at Hannakins Farm Community Centre in Rosebay Avenue, was thrilled to have finally earned the belt, but now hopes to go on to gain further awards.
Ralph, who lives in Foxleigh and attends King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford, said: "It has been hard work, but I really enjoy it, especially learning new moves and finding out about the traditions.
"The club is good because we are not always competing against each other and help each other out a lot."
